Overhauls
Complete overhauls starting from $1,250

An overhaul is an intensive rebuilding of many parts of the flute and requires at least 30 hours of labor. All of the pads are replaced and shimmed. All springs, felts and corks are replaced. All pins are removed, polished and oiled. The body is buffed and polished--all dents and scratches are removed. The headjoint and footjoint tenons are custom fitted for smooth and precise connections.

When a client tells us they need an overhaul, they often only need a COA or a re-pad. New pads should last a number of years, and most players will only need a re-pad every 5 to 10 years. Likewise, a complete overhaul should only be needed after many years of use.

Custom Work
• Embouchure Hand-cutting and Custom Re-cuts from $100
• High E Facilitator--$85 to $100
• Lip Plate Replacement & Custom Keywork

As a headjoint maker, Jeff Weissman is highly experienced in carving embouchure holes. If your headjoint does not meet your expectations and needs, consider a custom re-cut. From the slightest sharpening of the far edge to overcutting and undercutting, Jeff is a master at making a headjoint sing.

A High E facilitator is a mini-tone hole inserted into the lower G key. This facilitator allows the High E to respond more easily, lowers the pitch of the High E and stabilizes the note in slurred intervals. A High E facilitator can be installed on any flute and only requires a one-day appointment.

For major repairs such as lip plate replacement, re-soldering, major dent removal, key extensions, etc., please call for quotes.

The Importance of Regular Maintenance
COA (Clean, Oil and Adjust)

We recommend a COA as an annual check-up for most professionals and college students who play for several hours a day. An annual check-up will keep your instrument in optimum playing condition and prevent small leaks and adjustments from becoming major problems that may severely impact your playing.

Pads
Leaky pads are the flute player’s curse. As felt pads settle, shift, expand or contract, a flute will feel weak in the low register, uneven from note to note and generally sluggish in technical passages. Pressing harder on the keys to seal the leaks will slow the player down technically and may cause further problems with the pad. Straubinger pads are very hard pads designed to minimize shifting and leakage, but no amount of finger pressure will seal a Straubinger pad leak when improperly shimmed or ripped.

Headjoint Corks
Headjoint corks are sealed with wax to ensure no air leakage through the crown. With the passage of time, the cork will age and shrink. Most players will need headjoint corks replaced every six to twelve months for optimum power and projection.
