Flutes

JB Weissman Music represents the "Big Three" of American flute companies: Brannen Brothers, William S. Haynes and Verne Q. Powell.   Many professionals believe these are the finest flutes in the world.  All three companies now offer more affordable drawn tone hole flutes as well as high-end soldered tone hole flutes.

We also represent two of the largest international companies, Miyazawa and Muramatsu , that offer introductory and intermediate professional flutes at affordable prices plus high-end flutes comparable to the best of the American flute companies. Our complete selection of professional flutes also includes Mateki and Sankyo as well as the independent American flute-makers Burkart, Tom Green and Chris McKenna.

Each of these companies produces flutes with unique character and tonal beauty built with the highest standards of craftsmanship. The purchase of an instrument from these companies signifies a valuable lifetime investment.

Vintage Flutes
The flutes produced by the Haynes and Powell companies in past decades have gained the reputation of "vintage."  These flutes are characterized by darker, more colorful tone qualities.  Despite the challenges of pre-Cooper scales and embouchure plates, these flutes are prized and sought after by orchestral, chamber and jazz flutists worldwide.

Vintage Powells in particular are so sought after that they qualify as long-term financial investments.  Flutes that sold for hundreds of dollars in 1950 now sell for over $10,000.

Student Flutes

Student flutes of today are vastly superior to those of twenty and thirty years ago.  The innovations and improvements found on professional flutes have steadily passed down to the student flute companies.  The scale and intonation have improved dramatically, pads and padding techniques have produced a more durable instrument, and modern embouchure cut and design are now available on even closed-hole beginner flutes.  Beginning and intermediate flutists of today are very fortunate to start their careers and avocations with the finest equipment imaginable.

Headjoints

When the purchase of a new flute is financially impossible, a new headjoint can provide some upgrading of tonal possibilities.  A different headjoint can brighten or darken the characteristic sound of a flute body and can improve the projection and articulation of an older flute.  In addition, options such as gold and platinum risers as well as gold lip plates are available.
